This is 200mg/L for adults.
For small children and the elderly, the guideline value is 20mg/L (10 times less!) This clearly shows how harmful excess sodium in the body can be.

As we nowadays consume too much salt (sodium chloride) in our diet, doctors generally recommend a low-sodium diet.
Excess sodium can be a risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease.
The WHO (World Health Organization) therefore recommends a maximum salt consumption of 5 g per person per day (around 1 teaspoon) – this corresponds to 2 g of sodium.

The WHO also stated in 2018 that around 10% to 30% (depending on the country) of cardiovascular deaths in countries in the European Region among 20- to 69-year-olds can be attributed to an increased sodium intake (over 2 g per day) (source: WHO report Europe 2018 – Health and well-being).

Based on current scientific knowledge, it is recognized that a diet that is permanently high in salt has the effect of increasing blood pressure and can therefore increase the risk of cardiovascular and kidney diseases.
