In this article, we look at the topic of physical limescale protection and explain more about how our limescale protection devices work.

Physical limescale protection – what is it?
Unlike chemical limescale protection (e.g. a softening system with salt), limescale protection is based on a physical process.
This means that the technology used changes the structure of the water due to physical processes so that the desired effect is achieved.
Two different methods are usually used for physical limescale protection – electrolytic and magnetic limescale protection.
Electronic limescale protection
This approach is used to protect against limescale deposits in pipes, in water treatment or generally to counteract limescale problems (e.g. on fittings or household appliances).
The structure of the limescale is changed by means of electrical signals in order to achieve the desired effect.
Magnetic limescale protection
Magnetic limescale protection works with a magnet ( not to be confused with an electromagnetic field, which is generated by a coil).
The magnetic field in magnetic limescale protection can only have an effect when the water is flowing in the pipe.
This means that a magnet is attached to the water pipe and acts on the flowing water.
The faster and the more water flows, the better the effect.
Incidentally, this applies to all current-free limescale protection products such as crystals, metal alloys and all turbulence devices that are installed in the pipe.
However, it is statistically proven that in a detached house, water is in the pipes on average 95% of the time.
There are times of day, such as the morning, when more water tends to be used, in contrast to very long phases, such as at night, when very little or no water is used.
It is precisely during long periods of standstill that limescale begins to build up on the inside walls of the pipes.
It is therefore important to generate a signal with the limescale protection device that reduces the build-up in the entire water pipe network or, in the best case, removes existing deposits and thus ensures limescale protection over longer periods of standing water.
Effective physical limescale protection with Tratson
The effectiveness of our limescale protection devices has been scientifically proven by a dissertation submitted to the ETH Zurich.
Our technology has been continuously developed over the last thirty years and creates a unique market situation for us.
Below, we go into more detail about how our technology works – but first we would like to say a few words about how companies deal with transparency.
Our technology, a trade secret?
As with many unique products, the knowledge acquired over many years and the application of this knowledge is of central importance.
Companies call it a “trade secret” and chefs call it a “secret recipe”.
Basically, both are guarded like the apple of an eye because a large part of economic success is based on them.
Naturally, those who keep the secret want to preserve it (see the clever Appenzellers with their cheese), while competitors and rivals do everything they can to reveal this secret or claim that they have long known its contents.
What was it like with Coca-Cola?
A good example in this context is the secret recipe of Coca Cola.
The composition has been known for decades: water, sugar, etc. Countless imitators and copiers have tried to copy Coca-Cola’s recipe: Pepsi-Cola, Afri-Cola, Virgin-Cola, to name just the best known.
Now the question: Do any of the imitation products taste like the original?
This is a question that everyone has to answer for themselves.
Corporate culture of continuous development
Well, this question is even more difficult to answer for technical products due to the lack of information.
There is no information on the composition, only a look at the inner workings might give an idea of how the product might work.
It is also undisputed that our limescale protection technology is unique and we are doing everything we can to keep it that way.
Nevertheless, it should be noted in this context that the development of our technology will never be complete, but that we strive for continuous further development and the associated improvement and cultivate this approach in our company.
How do Tratson limescale protection devices work?
However, so that the really interested parties and future customers of our products do not have to stand in front of closed gates, we would like to go into a little more detail below about our technology, which has been developed over the last 30 years:
We induce four signals continuously and sequentially via the four coils, which are attached to the main water pipe or the water distribution system of your property.
A signal is not a frequency response, but a bit word with a word length of 32 kB.
The shortest signal is in the µS range and the longest in the multi-digit mS range.
The first signal has the task of driving the differently sized calcium molecules in the drinking water towards each other.
The intention behind this is that the loose calcium molecules combine to form a quasi “string of pearls”.
This process is stopped again with the second signal so that the bead chain does not exceed a certain size.
The third signal accompanies the pearl necklace in the water until it exits the water pipe.
This ensures that the bead chain remains in the water and flows along until it exits and does not stick to a surface.
The fourth and final signal only comes into play with conductive pipe material and has a supporting effect of the preceding, third signal.
With a plastic pipe, the tendency to form limescale deposits is significantly lower due to the lack of free electrons, which is why the fourth signal only has a supporting effect here and can be neglected.
In comparison to other products that can only produce an effect when the water is flowing (e.g. magnets, crystals or metal alloys), it does not matter whether the water is flowing or standing in the pipes with our limescale protection devices.
This guarantees that your property is efficiently protected against limescale deposits 24 hours a day without interruption.
